Zuora Names Former IBM, Interwoven Executive Steven Martello as Vice President of Services

Cloud business leader continues trend of hiring top talent to address rapid growth in the subscription billing

Redwood City, CA — April 29, 2010 — Zuora, the company that defined and continues to lead the subscription billing industry, today announced the appointment of Steven Martello to its executive management team as Vice President of Services. Martello brings 30 years of high tech and enterprise experience to Zuora, having successfully led global service programs at Interwoven, Scient and IBM.

Martello is the latest addition to Zuora’s executive team, which has deep industry experience and a proven track record of working to ensure customer success. In 2009, Zuora hired Elizabeth Tse, who came from eBay, where she was vice president of Global Billing, Payments & Collections, as vice president of Customer Operations; and Shawn Price, former CEO of Savvion and executive vice president at Vitria; as President and General Manager.

Before joining Zuora, Martello was senior vice president at Interwoven, where he managed a team of 170 to run worldwide consulting, training, and technical support operations. This represented 60% of the company’s revenues. As part of the senior team, he helped drive 21 consecutive quarters of year over year revenue growth and operating margin expansion. Interwoven was acquired by Autonomy Corporation, PLC, in a transaction valued at approximately $800 million in Q1 2009.

Prior to Interwoven, Martello managed the worldwide professional services delivery team at Scient, then one of the leading Internet consulting firms, and created Scient’s US engineering center. Before that, he spent 17 years at IBM holding various executive positions, including running engineering, product marketing and industry solution sales teams in New York, North Carolina, and Texas.

“Steven has the right experience to build the best services organization that will complement the leading billing and commerce platform and help our customers deliver on their mission-critical needs,” said Tien Tzuo, CEO and Chairman at Zuora. “Our customer base has grown rapidly in the last year, and we believe it will continue to grow in size and diversity of customer size, market and requirements. Steven’s contributions will be key to help Zuora join the ranks of Salesforce.com, Google and Amazon.com as a leader in the cloudsphere.”

“Subscription billing is a highly specialized process and Zuora is clearly the leader in helping cloud computing companies successfully monetize their offerings,” said Martello. “I am thrilled to join Zuora as it continues its trajectory of rapid growth, and I look forward to working with a team of such smart, capable and dedicated people.”

SaaS Leader Xactly deploys Zuora to create a seamless quote-to-cash process across Salesforce CRM, Workday, and OpenAir - all in the Cloud

Entry of Global Subscription Billing Leader Heralds Rise of Subscription Economy in Asia

Singapore – May 7th, 2014 — Zuora, the leader in subscription commerce, today announced their plan to open an office in Singapore to support its growing customer base in Asia. This follows the opening of Zuora’s European office in London and Asia Pacific operations in Australia in 2010 and 2012 respectively to meet the growing demand for its services globally. Over 25% of Zuora’s business now comes from outside the US and and in the last year, Zuora increased its international staff by over 40% to respond to increased opportunity in those markets.

Zuora’s journey to global leadership began in 2007 with a singular vision of a Subscription Economy — a world where companies of all sizes would offer broad libraries of services via subscriptions instead of the traditional model of delivering products. In the last six years, the emergence of subscription-based services build around recurring revenue business models has caused a major transformation across multiple multi-billion dollar industries. This massive shift is having a disruptive and profound impact on companies across the globe in a wide-range of sectors, including media, technology, consumer retail, telecommunications, financial services and healthcare services, to name a few.

Despite being in the business of automating processes, Xactly was tracking and managing its customer subscriptions, from invoicing to renewals, in Excel spreadsheets. The company’s incredible growth over the last five years started to outstrip these manual processes, leaving them susceptible to costly human error.

CEO Chris Cabrera explains, “We were running full-steam-ahead and things seemed to be going fine. We were caught up in the excitement of ongoing double and triple digit growth when it came to my attention that we had not billed $200,000 in subscription fees on time for the past few months. That’s when I realized that Xactly needed a solution to help us keep pace with our growth.”

As a big believer in cloud computing, Cabrera decided to use only cloud-based solutions to support his company operations. To help scale the company’s growth, Cabrera assembled a “dream team” of cloud computing leaders, including salesforce.com for customer relationship management, Workday for financial accounting, OpenAir for professional services, and Zuora for billing and commerce.

Leveraging cloud solutions from leaders in the industry enabled Xactly to gain the benefits of world-class enterprise applications without time-consuming and costly hardware and software deployments. Today, Xactly uses Zuora as a platform that stitches together Salesforce CRM, Workday, and OpenAir, allowing transactions to flow between CRM, accounting, and professional services automation — giving Xactly a seamless, cloud-based quote-to-cash process. Zuora not only helped Xactly resolve its issue with overlooked invoices, but also ensures the company’s billing system is able to scale and keep pace with the company’s growth.

With the new platform in place, Xactly recently used Zuora to launch Incent Express, a product targeted at the SMB market. Incent Express is a native Force.com offering that is sold via the salesforce.com AppExchange. Zuora enabled Xactly to create new pricing plans for Incent Express and facilitated both the process for customers to purchase the product directly from AppExchange and the internal upsell process from Express to SPM Suite.

“Zuora made it incredibly easy for us to launch a new product. We didn’t have to think about how we were going to establish new customer accounts and collect subscription fees,” added Cabrera. “With Zuora, our billing system is a whole order of magnitude better than what we had before, and we know we now have the right solutions in place to help us continue to grow.”

“We gave Xactly a complete billing and commerce solution, seamlessly tied into CRM, accounting, and professional services automation to create a state-of-the-art quote-to-cash system — All in the cloud,” said Tien Tzuo, Founder and CEO at Zuora. “This is the vision we had when we started Zuora; this is the system we wish we had when I was at salesforce.com; and it’s a reality today.”

Zuora Wins ThinkForward Award from Beagle Research for Helping make the SaaS Business Model More Profitable

Company recognized for driving business process innovation and cost containment

Redwood City, CA — May 26, 2010 — Zuora, the first and only cloud-based billing and commerce platform, today announced that it has been recognized by market-research firm Beagle Research Group with one of the firm’s inaugural ThinkForward sustainability awards. In presenting the award, Beagle Research praised Zuora for its ability to help companies “streamline billing and customer service operations” as well as to “quickly innovate with pricing and packaging alternatives” for customers.

“Zuora is miles ahead in the industry with a subscription billing solution that transforms the way SaaS companies monetize their offerings and bring new products to market,” said Denis Pombriant, managing principal at Beagle Research Group. “We chose Zuora as a ThinkForward Award recipient because they are not only revolutionizing the subscription economy, but also making it easier and less expensive for companies to deliver SaaS solutions — a major advancement to driving more sustainable business.”

According to Beagle Research Group, the ThinkForward Award “highlights the practical application of front office business software that helps companies innovate new business processes to reduce multiple costs, such as transportation and travel, as well as for more fully engaging customers as full partners in the vendor-customer relationship.” Further, Beagle Research states, “Winners of the 2010 ThinkForward award were evaluated for their ability to provide sustainable support for business in at least one of three dimensions — business processes, cost containment and treating customers as a renewable business resource.”

“Zuora signed over $1 billion in contracted subscription revenue in the first quarter of our new fiscal year, which ended April 30. Clearly this momentum in the market is driven by a need for SaaS companies to better manage and monetize their businesses, the very thing Zuora does best,” said Shawn Price, president and general manager at Zuora. “We’re thrilled to be recognized among a great list of industry leaders and innovators with a Beagle Research Group ThinkForward Award.”

Along with Zuora, industry leaders such as Salesforec.com, iCentera, Kadient and Cloud9 Analytics were among those companies honored with a ThinkForward Award.

Zuora Joins Microsoft Windows Azure Technology Adoption Program as Charter Cloud Based-Billing Provider

Launches the Zuora Toolkit for Windows Azure enabling developers and ISVs to meter, price, and bill for Windows Azure platform cloud solutions

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif.— June 16, 2010

Company News

  • Zuora, the company that defined and continues to lead the subscription billing industry, today announced that it will join the Microsoft Windows Azure Technology Adoption Program (TAP) and help in the advancement of Microsoft’s cloud computing platform. Zuora is the first on-demand billing and subscription management provider to be chosen by Microsoft from among 300 ISV partners.
  • As part of the Windows Azure TAP program, Zuora is making immediately available its Zuora Toolkit for Windows Azure.
  • Zuora Toolkit for Windows Azure helps developers and ISVs meter, price, and bill for their Windows Azure platform cloud-based applications and services.

The New Face of Cloud Commerce — Metering, Pricing, Billing

  • As the world quickly moves to cloud computing, developers, ISV partners and enterprises need the right tools to build, run, and scale their solutions in the cloud and reduce the time-to-market and to support the changing subscription economy. Microsoft created the Windows Azure TAP to ensure the world’s most innovative companies not only adopt Windows Azure platform, but also help drive its success.
  • Concurrently, the shift to cloud computing is also driving substantial changes to the software market including how ISVs sell and charge for access. Customers are demanding software solutions on a subscription basis, using on-demand, pay-for-what-you-use models that mirror the elastic nature of the cloud itself. This is the new face of cloud commerce.
  • Unless vendors of cloud solutions — IaaS, PaaS, or SaaS — also have the right tools needed to meter, price, and bill for their offerings, cloud computing will not achieve its full potential.

Introducing the Zuora Toolkit for Windows Azure

  • To drive success and adoption for the Windows Azure ecosystem, Zuora has delivered the Zuora Toolkit for Windows Azure in conjuncture with Microsoft to enable developers and ISVs to easily automate commerce from within their Windows Azure application and/or website in a matter of minutes. With the Zuora Toolkit for Windows Azure, Windows Azure developers and ISVs can:
    • create flexible price plans and packages;
    • support usage and pay-as-you-go pricing models;
    • initiate a subscription order online;
    • accept credit cards with PCI Level 1 compliance; and
    • manage the customers, recurring subscriptions, and invoicing.
  • The Zuora Toolkit for Windows Azure can be accessed at https://developer.zuora.com/. Zuora is also providing a Z-Commerce for the Cloud code sample for developers to embed in their cloud solutions

Commentary

  • “Cloud computing is poised to change the way our customers do business, and we’re working to ensure that Windows Azure will enable these companies to quickly develop and deploy cloud-based applications,” said Michael Maggs, senior director, Windows Azure partner strategy at Microsoft. “The importance of Zuora’s solution is that it helps give developers and ISV’s the flexibility to monetize their applications based on any pricing variables.”
  • “The single most important service for ISV’s in the cloud is the ability to monetize, and Zuora removes the friction of building a payment ecosystem and manages the constant changes that come with subscription management,” said Shawn Price, president and general manager at Zuora. “We are excited to be chosen by Microsoft and to offer our expertise in cloud-based billing and commerce so the 10,000 Azure developers and customers will be able to launch and monetize their applications quickly.”

Zuora Announces Z-Commerce for the Cloud: The First On-Demand Commerce Solution for Cloud Businesses

Z-Commerce for the Cloud Delivers Essential Support for Rapidly Enabling Cloud Business Models

Structure 2010, San Francisco, CA — June 23, 2010

Enabling the Cloud Computing Business Model

  • Zuora, the company that defined and continues to lead the subscription billing industry, announced the release of Z-Commerce for the Cloud today at GigaOM’s Structure 2010 event in San Francisco.
  • Z-Commerce for the Cloud enables the new business models introduced by cloud computing that enterprise customers now demand. The new solution is the result of 12 months of development with cloud leaders including Cloud Central, EMC, IC&S, Nu-b, Sun, Tata, and Zetta.
  • Cloud computing is disrupting the $3.4 trillion technology industry as enterprises move away from owning and maintaining servers to choosing elastic compute clouds. But as the IT world moves to elastic server clouds, a fundamentally different business model is required — A usage-based, pay-as-you-go business model. Unless cloud vendors can solve the need to meter, price, and bill — the heart of the new business model — the cloud will never reach its full potential.
  • Until now, the lack of a billing infrastructure for the cloud has made it nearly impossible for many providers to effectively bring their offerings to market. Custom solutions and legacy ERP systems cannot support pricing configurations or frequent changes required to meet diverse and fluid customer requirements. Z-Commerce for the Cloud fills this gap.

Product Capabilities to Meter, Price and Bill

  • Z-Commerce for the Cloud enables cloud providers to automate metering, pricing and billing for their full spectrum of products, bundles, and configurations quickly and accurately.
  • Zuora enables complete capabilities for managing cloud business models, including:
    • Cloud Units of Measure: charge users per terabyte stored, IP address, gigabyte transferred, CPU instance, application user, and more.
    • Metering Infrastructure Integration: leverage pre-built integration with the metering systems from leading vendors like VMware, Cloud.com, EMC, and others.
    • Over 20 New Cloud Pricing Models: leverage over 20 pre-built cloud charge models, including on demand, reservation, location-based, and off-peak pricing, with the ability to configure much more.
    • Instant Pricing Configuration: support unlimited pricing and packaging configurability, along with the ability to make changes in real-time to adapt to market conditions.
    • Subscription Lifecycle Management: handle the lifecycle complexities of renewals, upgrades, cancellations, and more.
    • Online Z-Store: an online, PCI-compliant storefront that allows customers to make purchases, to manage their accounts, and to monitor usage in a self-service manner.
    • Automated Billing: automatically create itemized, recurring invoices, track payments, and manage the complexities of credit balances, refunds, charge-backs and more.
    • Partner Billing: provide reseller partners with an “in-a-box” solution to bill in the cloud, in addition to billing customers directly.
    • Blueprint for the Cloud: leverage best practices and business model considerations Zuora has accumulated from helping many vendors launch their cloud businesses. The blueprint can be downloaded today at www.zuora.com/cloud.
  • Z-Commerce for the Cloud is offered via four editions that address every business and usage model in the Cloud:
    • Service Provider Edition offers service providers the fastest way to get to market, with the flexibility to implement any number of usage-based pricing models.
    • Embedded Edition allows cloud providers to offer Zuora as an “in-a-box” service to any ISV or reseller partners who need their own cloud commerce solution.
    • Marketplace Edition enables cloud vendors to connect buyers and sellers of cloud-based services in an “App Store”-like environment, sharing in the revenues with the app providers.
    • Private Cloud Edition provides a solution for enterprises standing up private clouds to implement charge-backs for transparency and cost allocation.

Industry Leaders and Partners Endorse Zuora’s Vision for the Cloud

  • Microsoft: “Cloud computing opens up worlds of new opportunity for commerce,” said Dianne O’Brien, Senior Director of Business Strategy for Windows Azure. “But in order to seize those opportunities and thrive in this new model, we need commerce systems that enable us to meter, price, and bill for usage in the cloud.”
  • OpSource: “As a leader in enterprise cloud and managed hosting, we’ve seen firsthand how important the ability to meter, price and bill is for our customers,” says Keao Caindec, SVP and Chief Marketing Officer of OpSource. “Zuora provides a comprehensive on-demand subscription billing solution, and together we offer our customers best-in-class solutions to manage their entire cloud stack from infrastructure to billing.”

  • Neovise: “In order to succeed, cloud-based businesses must not only deliver compelling value through their technology, but they must also offer new ways of purchasing and consuming that value. This means completely different approaches to packaging, pricing, revenue collection and more,” says Paul Burns, President of Neovise. “Z-Commerce for the Cloud is the eCommerce platform that helps commercial cloud service providers deliver and monetize services according to any business model their customers require.”
  • Beagle Research: “Business models are dramatically different in the cloud,” said Denis Pombriant, Founder and Principal Analyst of Beagle Research. “Zuora defined the subscription billing space, making them the right company to launch the first online commerce solution for the cloud, and its solution will enable cloud providers to succeed.”

Zuora joins OpenStack Community as a Founding Member with Industry Leaders Rackspace, NASA, Dell and Citrix

Zuora to Enable Meter, Price, and Bill Capabilities for the OpenStack Open Source Community with Z-Commerce for the Cloud

OSCON 2010, Portland, OR — July 26, 2010

Zuora Will Provide Metering, Pricing and Billing Capabilities for the OpenStack Cloud Platform

  • Zuora, the company that defined and continues to lead the subscription billing industry, announced today that Zuora is a founding member of the OpenStack™ community, an open-source cloud platform designed to foster the emergence of technology standards and cloud interoperability.
  • As part of this new open source community, service providers and cloud partners will be able to build, deploy and manage their own public and private clouds based on open source technologies and with Zuora’s Z-Commerce for the Cloud platform, companies standardizing on OpenStack will be able to automate the metering, pricing and billing for their full spectrum of products, bundles, and configurations quickly and accurately.

Enabling the Cloud Business Model Based on Open Source Technology

  • OpenStack provides the infrastructure, comprehensive cloud services and community that service providers and cloud partners require to deliver cloud computing services to enterprises. For more information on OpenStack, see Rackspace’s news release at https://www.rackspace.com/information/mediacenter/release.php?id=8489
  • Z-Commerce for the Cloud enables the new business models enabled by OpenStack that enterprise customers now demand such as the ability to meter, bill and price for any type of cloud consumption unit (e.g. GB, MB, TB, CPU, etc). Z-Commerce for the Cloud was launched in June after 12 months of development with cloud leaders including Cloud Central, Cloud.com., EMC, IC&S, Nu-b, OpSource, Tata, and Zetta.
  • Until Z-Commerce for the Cloud was introduced, the lack of a billing infrastructure for the cloud has made it nearly impossible for providers to effectively bring their cloud offerings to market. Custom solutions, simple billing solutions and legacy ERP systems cannot support subscription and usage-based pricing configurations or frequent changes required to meet diverse and fluid customer requirements. Z-Commerce for the Cloud fills this gap.

The OpenStack community and Zuora will Enable the Cloud Computing Business Model

  • “The OpenStack community is off to a great start with founding members such as Zuora adding critical capabilities for public and private cloud deployments,” said Mark Collier, an original organizer of OpenStack and VP, Business Development at Rackspace. “Zuora’s Z-Commerce for the Cloud solution solves the fundamental need to meter, price, and bill in the cloud, helping drive the commercial success and adoption of OpenStack.”
  • “OpenStack is changing the game of cloud computing by offering service providers an open source cloud that’s proven to scale, and by building a strong, open community,” said Shawn Price, president and general manager at Zuora. “We are truly excited to have the opportunity to work with industry leaders like Citrix, Dell, and Peer 1, to bring forth the metering, pricing and billing capabilities required for the open source cloud to deliver on its potential.”

Telecom Provider Open Range Launches Large-Scale Subscription Billing Solution with Zuora in Less Than 100 Days

Zuora Brings Unprecedented Real-Time Flexibility to Telecom Subscription Billing

Redwood Shores, CA – August 12, 2010 — Zuora, the company that defined and continues to lead the subscription billing industry, announced the company has successfully implemented a subscription billing platform for Open Range Communications, one of the nation’s hottest wireless broadband providers in under 100 days.

Traditional telecom billing systems can take years and millions of dollars to implement. In this case, Open Range required its new telecom billing system to integrate with seven different systems and provide the flexibility to change pricing across a broad range of customer communities in 17 states. Open Range selected Zuora to deliver real-time flexibility to support myriad pricing packages and promotions while scaling to support Open Range’s fast-growing business. Completed in less than 100 days, the implementation positions Zuora as the clear leader in subscription billing for next-generation telco business models.

While providers throughout the telecom industry face a critical need to increase the flexibility and agility of their billing systems, this requirement was mission critical for Open Range. Backed with $267 million from the Department of Agriculture and $100 million from One Equity Partners, the private equity arm of JPMorgan Chase, the company has launched an aggressive initiative to bring wireless high-speed Internet access to hundreds of un-served and under-served rural communities across America.

As it works to connect 6 million customers in 546 communities, Open Range needed to tailor a large number of pricing packages and promotions to fit the requirements of different areas, then sign customers in real-time via call center, online self-service, and door-to-door sales. In addition to billing by metered usage across a diverse and ever-changing spectrum of rate plans, Open Range must also perform complex tax calculations reflecting different tariffs for VoIP, international calls, and Internet access.

“As a next-generation provider, we need to be able to make changes at the speed of today’s fast-moving telecom marketplace while supporting subscription agreements as diverse as the needs of our customers,” said Q Saeed, Executive Vice President, Business Operations and Corporate Development at Open Range Communications Inc. “Zuora made it possible for us to bring modified pricing plans to market quickly, bill against them in real-time, and scale easily to keep pace with our rapid growth in the months and years ahead.”

Zuora completed its implementation of Open Range’s new billing platform in under 100 days even though the project had high degree of complexity with multiple integration points throughout company’s ecosystem, including:

  • ERP general ledger,
  • Salesforce.com customer and partner portal,
  • Vertex tax solution,
  • Paymentech credit card processing, and
  • Allianza Telecom telco switch.

The system has been fully operational since going live in June.

“Time is of the essence as we work to hit our go-to-market launch dates,” said Saeed. “Zuora not only gave us exactly the capabilities we need to fully enable our business model, but did it in a fraction of the time of a traditional enterprise platform.”

“Telecom billing is a multi-billion dollar market traditionally dominated by expensive systems that take years and years to deploy”, said Zuora founder and CEO Tien Tzuo. “Our work with Open Range, where we tackled their complex telecom billing needs — and brought them live in 100 days — this truly shows the maturity and scalability of Zuora’s platform, and how much it truly is a game changer.”
