Senior DBA (MySQL), Technical Operations (Redwood City, CA)

Job Description:

We are looking for a seasoned Sr. DBA with specific expertise in MySQL to join our fast growing, market leading SaaS business. This role will be a key member of the Technical Operations (TechOps) organization which supports and scales the Zuora service and underlying infrastructures. The Sr. DBA role is a senior level position that will be responsible for all MySQL database instances across all geographic environments including the design, performance, fault tolerance, and data synchronizations required for the business. This role is primarily an "operational DBA" as opposed to a "development DBA" however the perfect candidate will be just as fluent in both.

The ideal candidate for this role will have specific expertise in building, managing, and scaling MySQL database platforms for high volume online service businesses. This role will be responsible for ensuring the database platforms used across all Zuora infrastructures operate optimally to sustain or exceed Zuora's service level agreements and application response times. As the performance of the database is critical to the response time of the application, and the Zuora service is business critical to every single one of its customers, this role is critical to the success of the business itself. The Sr. DBA should have significant background and expertise in system administration for Linux and open source environments, and be fluent in best practices in designing optimal system and storage architectures. This role must be security minded and continuously exercise good judgment in ensuring the privacy and integrity of data. Prior experience in managing database systems that store highly sensitive data and adhere to regulatory compliance such as PCI and SAS70/SSAE16 is a must.

This role will work closely with fellow members of the TechOps team to drive best practices in infrastructure design and data replication to maintain business continuity and performance.

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Participate in design reviews with Development to ensure a given release does not compromise the security, integrity or quality of the underlying data structures used by the application
  2. Maintain high security and ethics, adhering to regulatory compliance such as PCI and SAS70/SSAE16 with respect to data storage, management, and access
  3. Develop tools and processes to establish trends in data growth and forecast capacity needs
  4. Execute data migrations and database upgrades as part of Zuora's product releases
  5. Define the architectural vision and strategy for all MySQL database environments
  6. Ensure all MySQL databases and processes follow best practices and fit into the strategy
  7. Initially perform, and longer term provide oversight for all MySQL database administration including installation, configuration, replication, backups, and performance tuning
  8. Work with the various Engineering groups and ensure database changes are in-line with operational standards and meet the strategies needed to scale

Requirements:

  1. 7-10 years supporting database platforms for online service businesses
  2. Have experience in both OLTP and OLAP design methodologies
  3. Be able to determine when an RDBMS or a NoSQL solution is the right fit
  4. Drive best practices in monitoring MySQL databases with the ability to identify key performance indicators and put facilities in place to alarm on-call personnel for actionable events
  5. Expertise in various MySQL replication technologies including when to use one method over another, limitations, and alternatives
  6. Fluency in horizontally scaling database infrastructures and identifying the most appropriate factors from which to split against based on application design and supported use cases
  7. Experience in designing and managing MySQL clustering is preferred
